SUMMARY:Sunaura Taylor presents "Disabled Ecologies: Lessons from a Wounded
Desert" in conversation with Heather Hax
DESCRIPTION:Baltimore Book Festival 2024: Red Emma's stage\nA powerful anal
ysis and call to action that reveals disability as one of the defining fea
tures of environmental devastation and resistance.\n\n\n\nDeep below the g
round in Tucson\, Arizona\, lies an aquifer forever altered by the detritu
s of a postwar Superfund site. Disabled Ecologies tells the story of thi
s contamination and its ripple effects through the largely Mexican America
n community living above. Drawing on her own complex relationship to this
long-ago injured landscape\, Sunaura Taylor takes us with her to follow th
e site's disabled ecology—the networks of disability\, both human and wi
ld\, that are created when ecosystems are corrupted and profoundly altered
.\n\nWhat Taylor finds is a story of entanglements that reach far beyond t
he Sonoran Desert. These stories tell of debilitating and sometimes life-e
nding injuries\, but they also map out alternative modes of connection\, s
olidarity\, and resistance—an environmentalism of the injured. An origin
al and deeply personal reflection on what disability means in an era of in
creasing multispecies disablement\, _Disabled Ecologies _is a powerful c
all to reflect on the kinds of care\, treatment\, and assistance this age
of disability requires.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunaura Taylor is Assistant Professo
r of Environmental Science\, Policy\, and Management at the University of
California\, Berkeley\, and author of the American Book Award–winning B
easts of Burden: Animal and Disability Liberation.\n\nHeather Hax is a lec
turer at Towson University. Her areas of expertise include social and envi
 ronmental movements\, sociology\, political economy\, globalization\, race
 \, class\, and gender.\n\nRSVP here!\n\n\n
